Prompto… aaaaah this was such a fun development.

AS YOU KNOW, Kanesan immediately started off disliking Prompto! He saw the camera and immediately went “a mutsu” and wrote him off right then and it absolutely did not occur to him at that point that Prompto also used a gun… or maybe it did if it was on his profile? Look, I don’t know, it’s been like two months but he’d have read it. EITHER WAY Prompto kind of screams Mutsu, with his apparently cavalier attitude, the camera, the gun… so Kanesan, with his biases, did not think much of him, and was actually a bit offended at Prompto claiming they were friends right off the bat.

Then Prompto died, and he was like, “hm, that sucks,” because Prompto seemed like he meant well? But also, Mutsu. He honestly didn’t think much of it aside from the fact that, you know, someone being murdered? Really sucks! Also it made Hizamaru feel bad and that sucks more!

Fast-forward a couple weeks, and Kanesan died, too! That sucked most! And he absolutely was not expecting to be greeted by Prompto when he arrived in the graveyard, especially not so… well. Cheerfully? I guess? Obviously he was feeling a bit disoriented and he was lowkey judging Prompto for the good mood because hey? He just died? Hello??

But honestly? It was nice to have someone around who wasn’t so focused on the “hey, we’re fucking dead” part, and I think he appreciated that the most. Sure, Prompto had more time to adjust to this than those who arrived in week 3, and they deserved their own adjustment period… but for Kanesan, it’s better to keep moving, so he was a bit grateful to have someone around who didn’t really give him a chance to get stuck in his own mind. That’s when he started to reevaluate Prompto.

Then they went into battle together and… surprisingly, worked very well together as a team. He honestly wasn’t expecting Prompto to do so well in battle, especially with a gun, but he held his own and bounced off of Kanesan quite well, both of them working in tandem to defeat both the demons and the possessed Byleth. It gained Prompto a healthy amount of respect from him. I think this is what made him think that hey, maybe not all Mutsus are bad Mutsus, and maybe he wouldn’t mind being this one’s friend, after all. Not that he said that out loud, of course, because some things take time.

It wasn’t until the final stretch of the game that he accepted that they were friends - when Prompto refused to give up, and was very insistent on keeping everyone motivated instead of just sitting down and accepting the fate that they’d been given. Kanesan had been growing to value Prompto up to this point, and had started coming around to seeing him as himself and not just as discount Mutsu, but that’s really the mark of where Kanesan started to respect him personally value him as a friend. That kind of optimism isn’t something you come across every day, you know? And Prompto had really made himself the mood maker of the graveyard by this point, so seeing him refuse to give up despite having been the first one to die here? That really meant a lot. It isn’t hard to see the effect he’s had on the others, and… yeah. Kanesan tries to support everyone, but he’s brash enough that it doesn’t always work. So he could really admire the ease with with Prompto did it, and honestly? He really wants to be able to send Prompto home. Kanesan fully believes that he deserves it. And even if they don’t… he’s glad to have a friend here, for the end.

But also. If they do find a way home before they turn into demons? He’s going to be real mad if Prompto never visits - less for his own sake, and more for Hizamaru’s. And he’s also gotta meet the saniwa? He’s going to regret everything if the Mutsus meet, but honestly? Kanesan’s convinced that all the other swords will love him, and he’d really like to see that.

So yeah! “Enemies” to friends! It’s a nice arc that Kanesan didn’t see coming, but he is really happy with how things turned out. And we finally got some positive CR so I’m happy with that too! \o/

AS YOU KNOW, Kanesan never really cared much for Shiraishi? It appeared to him like Shiraishi simply didn’t care about suddenly finding himself in a place like this, and couldn’t be bothered to even try to do anything about it, and that rankled a lot! Like, come on, at least give it uno shot before accepting your fate. His opinion was not improved by how Shiraishi seemed to love twisting words around to suit his interests or play games with other people, because rude? Rude and also annoying.

What also didn’t help? The people he decided were worth trusting didn’t have great opinions of Shiraishi, either. So he felt justified. However, Kanesan has this problem where he feels that it’s important to work together even if you hate each other, and he firmly believes the best way to do that is to fish out the why behind someone’s words and actions. It’s important to talk about things!

So he tried, and usually this strategy works! He’s had a lot of success! But obviously Shiraishi didn’t go for it, so things just got worse lmao. That was fun for me if not Kanesan. So after a few attempts at figuring him out, Kanesan eventually just gave up because it clearly wasn’t worth pursuing any further. As far as he was concerned, Shiraishi didn’t want to bother with anyone, even to try and help find a way out, and that meant he was a waste of time. Even when he appeared in the graveyard, he didn’t seem to care about anything, so Kanesan just kept his distance so neither of them would have to be annoyed by each other. He may have been a little tempted to kick some sand in Shiraishi’s face when he was just lying there moping, but listen, he had better things to do than be that petty.

He does think it’s a shame that they never figured each other out, though! From the memory he saw, Kanesan is absolutely convinced that they’re… a bit similar, in their struggles with emotions and the human heart? It’s a common ground that they could have related over, if either of them could get over themselves long enough to bother, and he recognizes that. But Shiraishi being Shiraishi, he doesn’t think it’s worth spending his time on when they have the whole, you know, demon thing looming over their heads. Shiraishi nothing compared to that, and so Kanesan will just continue to treat him as such unless Shiraishi makes a move on his own, which he won’t. It’s fine.

Hey so real talk, Kanesan trusted Junpei more than anyone, right from the start. Like, okay, the swords were here? And he would have trusted them, if literally anyone could corrale this particular unit into actually working together like a team (Kanesan is not that person, though not for lack of trying). But Junpei showed his curiosity from the start, along with a strong will to help and the brains to back it up.

Most of the time. He still did some stupid shit that Kanesan will judge him for, but that’s wahtever.

Anyway it helped that he stroked Kanesan’s ego? As we know, he is a peacock and likes to be complimented and Junpei gave him that in spades. But he wasn’t just a flatterer; he did good work, too, and that’s the combination that matters! Good looks or personality are only so helpful, you know. So Kanesan liked him a lot! Junpei was great! Best human around!

Though his world and their form of time travel was, uh, a little concerning? Being able to just jump around (or so it sounded to him?) and change things to their liking? That sounded a lot like the Revisionists, but Kanesan could acknowledge that maybe different worlds have different rules, because hey, they’re apparently in a different dimension entirely while they’re on this boat, so why not? It makes enough sense when you don’t understand a word of what’s going on around you.

The bigger issue was… Junpei was having a Bad Time starting in week zero when Prompto died, and it didn’t get better. Every week seemed to target someone that Junpei cared about, and Kanesan was worried about him! After a few of their conversations, he’d been absolutely convinced that Junpei didn’t handle emotions well and needed someone to help him get better at it - so even if he didn’t want to talk it out with Kanesan, he wanted to make it clear that he fully believed that Junpei shouldn’t bottle everything up and keep it to himself. This is maybe the one thing he felt critical of Edelgard for, because he definitely believed she was the one to tell Junpei that a leader should never show that kind of weakness, and while Kanesan’s master was the same way? He never really agreed with that mentality

He felt a little naggy sometimes, when bringing this kind of thing up to Junpei? Like, Kanesan knew he wasn’t really a fan of being open with his feelings, for whatever reason. He seemed a lot like Nagasone and his master, who kept things to themselves so that they could be strong for the team and hold them together a little better… so he harping on it didn’t feel great, because he had a healthy respect for both Junpei and Nagasone, and it almost felt like he was violating that in trying to break through that wall. All the same, Kanesan was sincere in wanting Junpei to have somewhere and someone he felt safe doing that with, no matter who it was. If nothing else, he believed it would help them all work together as a team, to help garner understanding between each other and all that - but he said that a lot, didn’t he?

Of course, just as, Kanesan believed he was finally getting through to him and that they’d finally become a real team, roles and all… he died. And wow, did he feel guilty about that, once he woke up in the graveyard. There he was, worried about Junpei losing someone he liked every week so far, promising to work together as a team from now on and to be more open with each other… and there he went to his death. He did everything he could think of to help solve his own murder before he left - leaving hints in the letter and the video, fighting as hard as he could against an opponent whose style he couldn’t compensate for - but it didn’t make him feel much better, in the end. He felt like he’d failed? Not just himself and his role, but also Junpei, because that promise wasn’t even a whole 24 hours old before this happened. And that sucked!!

And helping from the graveyard? Not easy!! But Kanesan did his best and he believed that any hints he sent from their side, Junpei would figure it out if no one else did. If there was anyone that would get them home or figure out the best solution in the meantime, it would be Junpei. He never lost that belief, even when that final bit of news about the ritual came in. It wasn’t great, but… he trusted that out of everyone, Junpei and Edelgard would be the ones to make the best decision for all of them, and follow through on it. And he wasn’t let down! That was great!

So now it’s just… sit tight and wait for Junpei and the rest to figure this out again. It kind of sucks, not being able to do much? Kanesan hates feeling useless, so he’s going to keep trying whatever they can think of from the island and to keep everyone on task, as Junpei suggested he would, until the next time they meet. And he does believe they’ll meet again - and as themselves, neither of them demonified. He’ll be looking forward to that day, however long it takes to come.

I guess at first, Kanesan was relieved to find that Higekiri and the others were there with him! It, uh, didn’t really last because Higekiri has a habit of stressing him out with how lackadaisical he can be, laughs. Kanesan believed that since they had almost a full team ANYWAY, they should absolutely work together AS a team to try and find a way to get home! It was a natural assumption as a member of the Shinsengumi, so he just… assumed it would be easy enough for the rest of them, too.

AND THEN IT WASN’T which partially was for ooc reasons which I’m absolutely fine with, but Kanesan was very frustrated about it! He didn’t even care (much) that Higekiri couldn’t get his name right (he’s seen that Hige can’t even remember Hizamaru 99% of the time so, like, whatever); he was more upset about how these swords weren’t working well as a team.

Hige’s memory issues were a frustrating in trial, and sometimes so were his other shenanigans, but honestly despite all of that, Kanesan feels a healthy amount of respect for Higekiri as a sword and a sword warrior. Hige’s one of the oldest swords around, and the legends surrounding him can’t all be untrue, right? And Kanesan trusted both Genjis to be able to handle the threat of demons better than any of them, because he knows while Hige is just Like That most of the time, he won’t let it get in the way of the mission when it really counts, and that’s what matters most.

So when Hige also approached him about his role, Kanesan’s respect for him rose greatly. Yeah, he knew Hige wasn’t ignoring everything going on around him, but he was still a little surprised at how much information he’d managed to gather without letting the rest of them know anything! (And a little annoyed by that, but you know.) He was impressed, and delighted that Higekiri was living up to the legends.

And uhhhh then he died! Then Hiza died! And Kanesan spent most of his time worrying about Hiza who was in turn worrying about Hige, so he kept a close eye on him during the trials even though he couldn’t do anything from the island. And when Beck joined them there and told the group that Higekiri was possessed by a demon… well, that was kind of devastating in a number of ways, but part of Kanesan was a little relieved that, if things went as he expected, the Genji brothers would be reunited. Even though it would mean they had both died, he knew bad it felt to be separated from the people you love, so… would it really be so bad, as long as they were together?

For better or worse, though, the ritual worked, meaning they would have to stay separated, so once again Kanesan felt worried about how Higekiri would handle it. Hizamaru at least had Prompto, but he didn’t know if Hige had anyone who would matter enough to help him through losing Hiza, and… yeah, in a way, he felt like he understood the pain they were both going through, leaving his own brother and his partner behind in the citadel.

However, Kanesan knows that if there is anyone who will never give up on them, it’s Higekiri. Sure, it’s probably out of a personal interest more than anything, but that counts! So he’s glad that it’s Higekiri on the other side, with Junpei and some of the others, because that’s the combination that he believes will work best to find a good solution for them without leaving their worlds prey to the demons.

wwx… hahaha. Kanesan always liked him? He thinks the guy has a good sense of humor and could see that he was trying very hard to find a way to help everyone from the very start - and that’s absolutely something he appreciated from day one. So he’s a bit of a gremlin? That’s fine, there are plenty of gremlins in the citadel. It’s no big.

He was definitely surprised when WWX came to him for sex first? Like… he’s a sword. He just learned about this. Why him? Kanesan never did learn that it was because he apparently reminded WWX of Lan Zhan and it’s probably because WWX himself never realized it which is so funny and so stupid. Anyways he hoped he did a good job and honestly… kind of wanted to get some experience and go back to WWX later to earn his apparent aura of good sex skills, which I hate, but there we go. Because, you know, WWX was kind of weird, but he was trying to do good? And he doesn’t look half bad either, and those are the two most important things here, obviously.

Of course he never got the chance to prove his prowess because he went and DIED, which sucked. But Kanesan watched from the graveyard whenever he had the chance, and his opinion of WWX didn’t really change much! In fact, he grew to appreciate WWX even more for never giving up, even if he did learn that Wei Ying is, in fact, an absolute gremlin and not nearly as stylish as he appears at first glance. But if he’d learned that it was WWX who inherited his role, Kanesan would’ve been rather pleased by it, given all his past efforts with the talismans and such.

HOWEVER… the one really big downside came around endgame, when they learned more about their fates and that those who died would basically be trapped or doom their worlds to being sex demon fodder. Kanesan did know the whole time that blood magic was in WWX’s repertoire, but somehow it became a lot more real at that point? Like, damn, blood magic is what got us into this mess and blood magic is what will doom our worlds if the living go that route, so like… what good could possibly come of it? He’s uh. Not too fond of the idea of putting all the worlds at further risk for their sake, especially if the supposed rescue method involves blood magic WHICH HAS NEVER GONE WELL FOR THEM.

It’s also disgusting to be given clothing drenched in blood, you know? Gross. Kanesan has a reputation to uphold, thank you very much.

But uhhh he appreciates the effort? WWX is using what he knows to try and help out, and that’s great - he just has a really nasty, gremlin way of going about it. But that’s just WWX’s entire being, so sure, whatever (so maybe it’s better for Kanesan that he died and they never thotted again). Kanesan’s glad he’s still alive though, so he’ll be cheering WWX on from the graveyard! Rescue them if you can, my dude, otherwise maybe chill with the blood magic because that never seems to help.

Oh, Kagachi! Kanesan loved him. It was great having another person around who reminded him of home! He spent every one of his threads with Kagachi going, “wow, he’s just like Ookurikara!” and decided he wanted to be friends almost immediately, because the thing about Kara? He isn’t friendly, but he comes with built-in friends in the form of the other Date swords. As far as Kanesan knew, Kagachi had no one, and that was unacceptable.

He also figured that Kagachi would be one of the most useful people here, if given half a chance to help the rest, and that was a major plus. It meant they should get to know each other if only to be able to work together a little more cohesively! Understanding each other’s motivations and all that is very helpful when you’re on a mission together, you know?

That said… he was never convinced that he actually broke through Kagachi’s shell. Kagachi never really acted differently towards him, never really warmed up or anything. Granted, Kanesan isn’t sure if he can warm up in the usual sense (some people just aren’t like that, and that’s fine!), but it made it infinitely harder to tell how Kagachi felt. But he liked their spar, even if he still thinks that scythes are an inferior weapon, so honestly he was hoping to do it again someday!

Also he was delighted when he found out Kagachi had a role too. Kagachi very clearly wanted to help everyone who was trapped, so Kanesan was certain that being granted a role, whatever it was, would be the perfect way for him to do so. And he was very excited to work together with Kagachi, as two of the people with roles. But of course, he died, and that kinda nixed that whole thing, hahaha.

Kanesan had no idea that Kagachi felt the slightest bit of respect or anything positive towards him until he said so in the trials. He respected Kanesan? Wow! Nice! They were friends? Awesome! lmao but honestly? He’d thought their conversation before he died had actually gotten Kagachi’s ire because of the circumstances of their roles - Kagachi had seemed a little angry that his role was… perhaps less proactive than Kanesan’s? Being that he was dead, it wasn’t important, but it did disappoint him a little to leave things feeling that way, until more positive remarks came up in trial. It was nice, knowing that he’d actually gotten further with Kagachi than he realized. Friends!

Not that he could really do anything about it, except offer what little information he had from the graveyard. He’s not sure what Kagachi thought of all that, really? But it is what it is. Kanesan is just glad for a chance to say goodbye (and hear from Kagachi himself that they’re friends, lmao he’s going to treasure that moment until the demons take over), though he doesn’t intend to give up on himself or the others that are trapped on the island with him. After their last conversation, Kanesan wants to find a way to free them all, and he hopes that if they do, he can someday see Kagachi and spar again.

Commander! I went into this CR completely canonblind, but Edelgard had Kanesan’s respect from the very beginning! The way she immediately leapt into not only trying to find a way out, but to get everyone to work together towards that goal spoke to him about her leadership skills. No one else seemed to bother, but Edelgard was right there in the middle of everything and he liked that!

At first the whole lieutenant/second-in-command thing was… eh, more or less a joke for him, more teasing than anything? It’s just his thing, as the sword of the vice-captain of the Shinsengumi. He jokes about it when joining an expedition team, too, so it was natural for Kanesan to look at the one trying to take charge and bring that up again. Most people either brush it off or straight up ignore him, so he wasn’t expecting her to acknowledge it and tell him to earn the position first. Funnily enough, that’s really what motivated him to actively try and help Edelgard out - not that he wouldn’t try and help anyway, but he wanted to see if he could earn her trust.

And though they were only working together for a relatively short time before he died, Kanesan thinks he did it!! And he absolutely gained more respect for Edelgard herself - I’ve said it before, but she reminds Kanesan a lot of his hold master, Hijikata. They both made a lot of hard decisions that made them less than popular, but were meant to be for the good of their people. Kanesan believes that they were both trying their best to do good in the ways that they knew how, so he couldn’t not respect that.

It’s been said before, but Edelgard definitely had a fan club in the graveyard during endgame, and Kanesan was absolutely part of it. He believed that if anyone would make the best decision in their situation, it was Edelgard, and she didn’t let him down. Sure, it’s not a great decision, sure, she kinda doomed Tonbokiri in the process - but wasn’t that the best she could do with what she was given? She tried her best and she’s valid.

All in all… Kanesan really likes her! And like he told her in the goodbye log - if he could choose a new master of his own, he’d want someone like her. He wouldn’t mind serving her again someday, if he ever gets free!

Okay, listen. Kanesan may have been the teensiest bit disappointed that this Chuuya wasn’t a poet like the other one, but it turns out? This is his favorite Chuuya, right from the moment he showed even an ounce of respect for Hijikata and the Shinsengumi.

Soooo he wasn’t displeased when he found out that they’d be working together while they were on the ship! He was much happier to work with Chuuya than Nathan, and he absolutely didn’t mind the requirement of sleeping with him to get any extra information he might want. Chuuya’s not bad looking? And he’s perfectly wakizashi sized? As far as Kanesan was concerned, this was a great working relationship.

Though uh. He said this on the last cr chart, I think? But he did kind of look at Chuuya as his stand-in master, since he was getting missions from him in the absence of the saniwa. And frankly, he didn’t mind that, either? Chuuya very obviously cared about the people working under him, and saw them as more than just tools, and that’s the kind of master a sword really cherishes, you know? So Kanesan really wanted to do a good job for him, especially if it meant getting them all home safely.

So… yeah! He was really upset with himself on that end when he died! From his perspective, Kanesan had failed his newest master and the rest of the people here by not being able to actively help any longer, and failed as a sword for falling in battle, even if that just… happens sometimes, even to the best warriors. But he never planned on giving up, so. He kept visiting Chuuya (he kind of missed having an excuse to see him whenever he wanted?) and trying to pass on information from the graveyard, and. welp.

He was pretty sure from the start that Chuuya wouldn’t take the news about the dead’s fates well? But since it would affect him too, Kanesan had to at least try and get his opinion on the matter. Obviously that didn’t work as planned, and it probably just left them both frustrated, and wow, did Kanesan really hate it when Chuuya turned up dead again. That sucked!!

And it sucked even more when he came to the graveyard, without any say in the matter and apparently no way of getting out!! He was in the right to be furious; Kanesan couldn’t fault him for it, even if he was of the opinion that staying behind was better for the time being when Chuuya very much did not agree. It’s fine? It’s not like either of them ever planned on staying on the island and waiting to become demons. Absolutely not! It became even more important to find a way out when he discovered that Chuuya would be with them, honestly, even if he was a little happy to have his newest master nearby. Now he’s just determined to get Chuuya back to his world and his people where he belongs, and to just… fix this, somehow. If it means destroying the whole island… well, that’s fine. They don’t have much more to lose, do they? So yeah. Kanesan thinks fucking up the island is a great idea - because even if it doesn’t get Chuuya and the others home, at least they’ll have tried.
