Hey so real talk, Kanesan trusted Junpei more than anyone, right from the start. Like, okay, the swords were here? And he would have trusted them, if literally anyone could corrale this particular unit into actually working together like a team (Kanesan is not that person, though not for lack of trying). But Junpei showed his curiosity from the start, along with a strong will to help and the brains to back it up.

Most of the time. He still did some stupid shit that Kanesan will judge him for, but that’s wahtever.

Anyway it helped that he stroked Kanesan’s ego? As we know, he is a peacock and likes to be complimented and Junpei gave him that in spades. But he wasn’t just a flatterer; he did good work, too, and that’s the combination that matters! Good looks or personality are only so helpful, you know. So Kanesan liked him a lot! Junpei was great! Best human around!

Though his world and their form of time travel was, uh, a little concerning? Being able to just jump around (or so it sounded to him?) and change things to their liking? That sounded a lot like the Revisionists, but Kanesan could acknowledge that maybe different worlds have different rules, because hey, they’re apparently in a different dimension entirely while they’re on this boat, so why not? It makes enough sense when you don’t understand a word of what’s going on around you.

The bigger issue was… Junpei was having a Bad Time starting in week zero when Prompto died, and it didn’t get better. Every week seemed to target someone that Junpei cared about, and Kanesan was worried about him! After a few of their conversations, he’d been absolutely convinced that Junpei didn’t handle emotions well and needed someone to help him get better at it - so even if he didn’t want to talk it out with Kanesan, he wanted to make it clear that he fully believed that Junpei shouldn’t bottle everything up and keep it to himself. This is maybe the one thing he felt critical of Edelgard for, because he definitely believed she was the one to tell Junpei that a leader should never show that kind of weakness, and while Kanesan’s master was the same way? He never really agreed with that mentality

He felt a little naggy sometimes, when bringing this kind of thing up to Junpei? Like, Kanesan knew he wasn’t really a fan of being open with his feelings, for whatever reason. He seemed a lot like Nagasone and his master, who kept things to themselves so that they could be strong for the team and hold them together a little better… so he harping on it didn’t feel great, because he had a healthy respect for both Junpei and Nagasone, and it almost felt like he was violating that in trying to break through that wall. All the same, Kanesan was sincere in wanting Junpei to have somewhere and someone he felt safe doing that with, no matter who it was. If nothing else, he believed it would help them all work together as a team, to help garner understanding between each other and all that - but he said that a lot, didn’t he?

Of course, just as, Kanesan believed he was finally getting through to him and that they’d finally become a real team, roles and all… he died. And wow, did he feel guilty about that, once he woke up in the graveyard. There he was, worried about Junpei losing someone he liked every week so far, promising to work together as a team from now on and to be more open with each other… and there he went to his death. He did everything he could think of to help solve his own murder before he left - leaving hints in the letter and the video, fighting as hard as he could against an opponent whose style he couldn’t compensate for - but it didn’t make him feel much better, in the end. He felt like he’d failed? Not just himself and his role, but also Junpei, because that promise wasn’t even a whole 24 hours old before this happened. And that sucked!!

And helping from the graveyard? Not easy!! But Kanesan did his best and he believed that any hints he sent from their side, Junpei would figure it out if no one else did. If there was anyone that would get them home or figure out the best solution in the meantime, it would be Junpei. He never lost that belief, even when that final bit of news about the ritual came in. It wasn’t great, but… he trusted that out of everyone, Junpei and Edelgard would be the ones to make the best decision for all of them, and follow through on it. And he wasn’t let down! That was great!

So now it’s just… sit tight and wait for Junpei and the rest to figure this out again. It kind of sucks, not being able to do much? Kanesan hates feeling useless, so he’s going to keep trying whatever they can think of from the island and to keep everyone on task, as Junpei suggested he would, until the next time they meet. And he does believe they’ll meet again - and as themselves, neither of them demonified. He’ll be looking forward to that day, however long it takes to come.
