Commander! I went into this CR completely canonblind, but Edelgard had Kanesan’s respect from the very beginning! The way she immediately leapt into not only trying to find a way out, but to get everyone to work together towards that goal spoke to him about her leadership skills. No one else seemed to bother, but Edelgard was right there in the middle of everything and he liked that!

At first the whole lieutenant/second-in-command thing was… eh, more or less a joke for him, more teasing than anything? It’s just his thing, as the sword of the vice-captain of the Shinsengumi. He jokes about it when joining an expedition team, too, so it was natural for Kanesan to look at the one trying to take charge and bring that up again. Most people either brush it off or straight up ignore him, so he wasn’t expecting her to acknowledge it and tell him to earn the position first. Funnily enough, that’s really what motivated him to actively try and help Edelgard out - not that he wouldn’t try and help anyway, but he wanted to see if he could earn her trust.

And though they were only working together for a relatively short time before he died, Kanesan thinks he did it!! And he absolutely gained more respect for Edelgard herself - I’ve said it before, but she reminds Kanesan a lot of his hold master, Hijikata. They both made a lot of hard decisions that made them less than popular, but were meant to be for the good of their people. Kanesan believes that they were both trying their best to do good in the ways that they knew how, so he couldn’t not respect that.

It’s been said before, but Edelgard definitely had a fan club in the graveyard during endgame, and Kanesan was absolutely part of it. He believed that if anyone would make the best decision in their situation, it was Edelgard, and she didn’t let him down. Sure, it’s not a great decision, sure, she kinda doomed Tonbokiri in the process - but wasn’t that the best she could do with what she was given? She tried her best and she’s valid.

All in all… Kanesan really likes her! And like he told her in the goodbye log - if he could choose a new master of his own, he’d want someone like her. He wouldn’t mind serving her again someday, if he ever gets free!
