Prompto… aaaaah this was such a fun development.

AS YOU KNOW, Kanesan immediately started off disliking Prompto! He saw the camera and immediately went “a mutsu” and wrote him off right then and it absolutely did not occur to him at that point that Prompto also used a gun… or maybe it did if it was on his profile? Look, I don’t know, it’s been like two months but he’d have read it. EITHER WAY Prompto kind of screams Mutsu, with his apparently cavalier attitude, the camera, the gun… so Kanesan, with his biases, did not think much of him, and was actually a bit offended at Prompto claiming they were friends right off the bat.

Then Prompto died, and he was like, “hm, that sucks,” because Prompto seemed like he meant well? But also, Mutsu. He honestly didn’t think much of it aside from the fact that, you know, someone being murdered? Really sucks! Also it made Hizamaru feel bad and that sucks more!

Fast-forward a couple weeks, and Kanesan died, too! That sucked most! And he absolutely was not expecting to be greeted by Prompto when he arrived in the graveyard, especially not so… well. Cheerfully? I guess? Obviously he was feeling a bit disoriented and he was lowkey judging Prompto for the good mood because hey? He just died? Hello??

But honestly? It was nice to have someone around who wasn’t so focused on the “hey, we’re fucking dead” part, and I think he appreciated that the most. Sure, Prompto had more time to adjust to this than those who arrived in week 3, and they deserved their own adjustment period… but for Kanesan, it’s better to keep moving, so he was a bit grateful to have someone around who didn’t really give him a chance to get stuck in his own mind. That’s when he started to reevaluate Prompto.

Then they went into battle together and… surprisingly, worked very well together as a team. He honestly wasn’t expecting Prompto to do so well in battle, especially with a gun, but he held his own and bounced off of Kanesan quite well, both of them working in tandem to defeat both the demons and the possessed Byleth. It gained Prompto a healthy amount of respect from him. I think this is what made him think that hey, maybe not all Mutsus are bad Mutsus, and maybe he wouldn’t mind being this one’s friend, after all. Not that he said that out loud, of course, because some things take time.

It wasn’t until the final stretch of the game that he accepted that they were friends - when Prompto refused to give up, and was very insistent on keeping everyone motivated instead of just sitting down and accepting the fate that they’d been given. Kanesan had been growing to value Prompto up to this point, and had started coming around to seeing him as himself and not just as discount Mutsu, but that’s really the mark of where Kanesan started to respect him personally value him as a friend. That kind of optimism isn’t something you come across every day, you know? And Prompto had really made himself the mood maker of the graveyard by this point, so seeing him refuse to give up despite having been the first one to die here? That really meant a lot. It isn’t hard to see the effect he’s had on the others, and… yeah. Kanesan tries to support everyone, but he’s brash enough that it doesn’t always work. So he could really admire the ease with with Prompto did it, and honestly? He really wants to be able to send Prompto home. Kanesan fully believes that he deserves it. And even if they don’t… he’s glad to have a friend here, for the end.

But also. If they do find a way home before they turn into demons? He’s going to be real mad if Prompto never visits - less for his own sake, and more for Hizamaru’s. And he’s also gotta meet the saniwa? He’s going to regret everything if the Mutsus meet, but honestly? Kanesan’s convinced that all the other swords will love him, and he’d really like to see that.

So yeah! “Enemies” to friends! It’s a nice arc that Kanesan didn’t see coming, but he is really happy with how things turned out. And we finally got some positive CR so I’m happy with that too! \o/
