GAME INFO
PREMISE

When you open your eyes, it's to a deep sense of nausea and disorientation.

The room sways and spins around you, bright ceiling lights burning into your retinas as you struggle to recognize your surroundings. The marble flooring is cold against your skin. A duffle bag is pressed against your chest, the sharp edges of its contents digging into your torso. As you slowly manage to pick yourself up from the floor, you become aware of two, equally as important details:

One, you have no idea where you are.

And, two— you are not alone.

Surrounded by a group of individuals who look just as anxious and confused as you feel, it seems like there are no answers forthcoming from whoever (or whatever) brought you here. It's up to you to find the answers you seek.

The only problem is... Will you live long enough to learn the truth?

---

[community profile] thotordie is a short term horror/comedy game, that mixes aspects from both murder games and sex games. Characters will arrive at the setting with no information of how they got here or for what purpose. Things will remain this way unless they take matters into their own hands, via interactions with the setting and the individuals around them. The more they dig around? The more information they'll find — and the sooner they will realize that only the most ruthless will have a chance to make it out of here alive.

Are they prepared to do whatever it takes to survive?

MECHANICS

This game takes heavy inspiration from mafia style games. If you're unfamiliar with this style of game, or simply unsure of how it translates to RP — don't worry. It's pretty easy to pick up once you get into the swing of things.

Each week, at least one (1) character will be targeted and killed. It's up to the survivors to figure out who is the true culprit behind each week's murder, as well as the ultimate goal behind the killing game they have been forced into. Evidence will be found via an investigation at the end of every week, but only the survivors can determine how useful or contradictory this evidence is.

To further complicate matters ICly, characters will eventually learn that they must engage in sex with each other to survive. The mandatory nature of this will become IC knowledge once it becomes relevant, and those who fail to comply will be quickly put down. More information on this will be offered once the mechanic goes into effect, so there's no need to worry about the fuck or die aspects right off the bat. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that some characters may be assigned special roles, meant to either aid or hinder the group as a whole. Survivors must work together to deal with all of these factors while avoiding total annihilation. Godspeed.

That said, the game itself will run on a 1:1 IC:OOC day ratio. This means that Monday is Monday, Tuesday is Tuesday, Wednesday is Wednesday, and so forth. The currently proposed schedule is as follows:

MONDAY TO THURSDAY: The weekly mingle will go up at 12 PM EST each Monday. This post will allow characters opportunities to make top levels, interact with the setting, and get that precious CR rolling. Weekly events may take place in the mingle, but this may not always be the case. We will always give you a heads up on the official discord server when this happens.

FRIDAY: Investigations will be posted at 6 PM EST. Characters will discover that week's victim, as well as stumble across important evidence that might help them solve whodunit. However, it's important to note that players should not feel pressured to find all the necessary evidence on Friday. They will have additional opportunities to go back and revisit locations on trial day.

SATURDAY: Trial day. This post will go up at 12 PM EST, with voting closing at 9PM EST. After voting closes, the person with the most votes will be removed from the room and the remaining characters will be given space to select an executioner.

SUNDAY: Execution. This post will go up at 2 PM EST. The executioner will be revealed, and will be expected to kill the selected "culprit"... regardless of whether that person is guilty or not.

Roles will have their own separate schedules, which will be divulged to the players who receive them when their applications are accepted. More information about the roles will be in the next section.

ROLES

As mentioned above, some characters will be assigned special roles. The respective players will be notified upon acceptance. Please note, however, that like in all murdergames these roles should be kept an IC/OOC secret at the beginning! It's no fun if you immediately run to your friends to spill the beans without first slamming betray, right?

The following roles will be present in [community profile] thotordie:

INVESTIGATIVE: A character with this role will be able to investigate one other character per week. It's up to them to decide what to make of the information they receive, and how to best utilize it.

MAFIA: Unlike standard murdergames, [community profile] thotordie will feature a rotating mafia. This means that the members of the in-game mafia will change with each week, via pure RNG. Their goal is, naturally, to select one (1) other character to kill for that week's trial.

PROTECTIVE: A character with this role will be able to protect one other character from death each week.

ITEM: A character with this role will be able to select items that will either benefit or hinder the group as a whole, or they may very well chose to keep what they receive to themselves.

... And even if you don't receive a role, don't worry! As mentioned before, this is a game that relies heavily on player interaction with the setting. There are plenty opportunities for everyone to get involved in shenanigans, as long as there's a will to do so. If there's ever something in particular your character would like to do and you aren't sure of how to go on about it, don't hesitate to get in touch with the mod team.

VOTING AND THOTTING

During each trial, characters will have the opportunity to vote for who they believe ought to be executed in retribution for the week's death(s). Voting will take place on a separate screened post each trial, and the character who receives the most votes will be executed the following day. The characters remaining will also have the opportunity to select the following day's executioner.

We'll be trying something new with this game's voting. Instead of voting being the de facto activity check for the game, it will not be required for characters to cast a vote by the close of trial; however, this will make it much easier for characters to be in the majority even if they only receive a small number of votes, and if all characters fail to vote, the results could be disastrous. Abstain at your own risk!

Activity check in this game will come in the form of your weekly thot report. This will OOCly be due by 12 PM EST ON WEDNESDAY at the latest for logistical reasons, but should include everyone that you plan to have your character bang that week (including Thursday and Friday). Characters whose players do not submit a thot report by the deadline will find that this game will live up to its name prior to the trial. Please be proactive about communicating with the other players to plan out your thotting for the week ... and again, abstain at your own risk!

FAQ

So, what are this game's rules, anyway?

First and foremost, be nice. This is a game created by friends, for friends, for all of us to have fun. Remember to be respectful of people's boundaries, remember that IC =/= OOC, and remember to treat everyone with respect.

Secondly, be active! Short-run games, especially smaller ones, cannot succeed if the people who join do not take part in them. If something comes up, please let us know ASAP so we can work with you to keep things moving and make it easier for you to get involved if you are able to return.

Thirdly, remember that your character can die at any time, whether it be by being targeted for murder, being voted for at trial, or one thing leading to another in a CYOA. However, we plan for there to be plenty to do even after your character's death, so don't worry! Death is not the end! Think of it more as a beginning.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, please communicate with us if anything within the game makes you uncomfortable. We've invited you to play in this game because we trust you to speak up and help us make this an enjoyable game for everyone, and we hope that in turn you can trust us to take your concerns seriously when they are brought to us. While we absolutely take pleasure in tormenting everyone's characters, the last thing we want is for anyone to feel uncomfortable out of character but not feel like they can bring it up to us, or that they should have to stay quiet for the sake of keeping the peace. That isn't fun for anyone.

Do I have to be present for every trial?

Strictly speaking, no. So long as you are engaging with the game during the mingle and have submitted your thot report, not being able to make an appearance at trial will not result in your removal from the game.

However, ICly, every character is required to attend, so for the sake of remaining familiar with events that your character would be present for, we do recommend it, or at least reading through the trial once it has concluded if you are unable to be there. Additionally, not being at the trial will not protect you from being voted for - and if you aren't around, your character will not be able to defend themselves. Also, it's just more fun to be able to take part, and is a great way to springboard into CR for the following week!

How long will the game last?

Assuming we get at least twenty-five players, the game is scheduled to run until November 23rd. We are prepared to run the game even with fewer players; however, the lower the number of characters we have to start out, the earlier the game will end.

Are powers nerfed in this game?

By default, characters will begin the game with all powers nerfed. However, at certain points in the game, a character that has powers in canon may have the opportunity to regain their powers. If this is something that may be of interest to you, please keep it in mind when considering which character to play!

What do I do if I want to commit a murder?

Great question! First things first, you'll want to head on over to the murder proposals page which hopefully your mods will have unlocked to let us know you'd like to kill that week. While we can't guarantee that we will approve every murder plot, depending on the number we get, we will certainly do our best to accommodate you.

Once your proposal has been approved, we will set up a group chat between all involved parties to plot out the murder.

If I die early, what happens next?

Characters who die during the course of the game will continue their stories in the graveyard. While dead characters will not be able to take part in or vote for someone during trials, we do have activities planned to help them affect the living side of the game and contribute to the overall story even after death.

To that end, we request that even if your character is killed, you still attempt to remain active! Our intention is not to take dead characters out of the game, but to instead put them into a position where they will be able to contribute in unique ways.

How active do I have to be?

While we do not have a hard-and-fast weekly thread minimum, we would prefer that if you join this game, you do so intending to be present. Participation in the weekly mingles, private conversations, or ideally some combination thereof are all ways that you can be active in the game. If something comes up and you will be unavailable for a given week, please let us know so we can make arrangements!

Private conversations?

Yes! At some points in the game, characters may wish to have discussions that do not have the potential to be overheard by the game at large. For these situations, you can create a private post on your journal, locked to the mods and to the participants, to be kept private until endgame. For those unfamiliar with DW post filtering, we will have a instructions on the private conversations page once the game begins.

How do I contact the mods with questions or concerns?

If you feel comfortable asking your question publicly, you can drop us a line in the questions for mods channel on our Discord server! If you prefer to speak to us privately, you can start a groupchat with us or ask one of us to put one together, or send us a group private plurk (including [plurk.com profile] beheads, [plurk.com profile] impuriteej, [plurk.com profile] entrappings, and [plurk.com profile] bloodthirstiest). We ask that barring extreme circumstances, you loop in all the mods on any official mod communication, so that we can all be on the same page without risk of anything getting lost in retelling.

Wait, Discord server?

Yes! Over the course of the last few games we have found that communicating via Discord has been more effective than sending out announcements over Plurk. To that end, we will not have an official mod plurk, although we will be reachable on our personal plurks if you are experiencing trouble logging in to Discord.

However, we understand that big group chats can be overwhelming. We have separated out the ooc chatting channel from the mod announcements and questions channels, so feel free to mute the non-housekeeping categories as needed so that you only receive notifications for official mod communications if that suits your style better.

What if I have a question that wasn't covered here?

Please go ahead and ask it! We're always glad to help clear things up if there's anything you're not sure of.
