[He is, VERY FUCKIN CURSEDLY AND UNFORTUNATELY, practically buzzing with intrigue as soon as this room is explained. He was already putting two and two together pretty fast considering what room it's attached to and the fact that apparently ancient china also put their dead bodies on slabs for cleaning, but now HE'S JUST. HE'S SO CURIOUS. HE'S LOOKING AROUND LIKE HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START.]
Oh! Haha, I guess it makes sense to have something like that on a ship... Passengers probably die mid-sail all the time during long trips, even on a regular boat.
[CHEERY.
But, hm. Well. Higekiri's inspecting the outside of the fridges, but he's just going to trot over to open up the fridge door on the farthest left. At least he opens it just a tiny crack first to peek in before pulling it open more, just in case it's fuckin booby trapped...
[The mortuary refrigerators are very, very clean. The stainless steel is impeccably polished, to the point where Higekiri and WWX will be able to see their own reflection. Unfortunately for WWX, the refrigerator he's trying to pull will not open. However, both he and Higekiri will notice that all the refrigerators seem to be labeled. Assuming Higekiri is standing near the rightmost corner while WWX is at the far left, the labels on the doors they're standing in front of are smudged beyond legibility. Hm.
It's Beck's lucky day because there's a scalpel among the tools near the autopsy table! And there are other sharp, bladed tools she can spot at a glance. There's nothing out of place at first glance, but... As she looks at the autopsy table herself, she will notice the light reflects oddly off a spot on the upper right corner of the table. It almost looks like there are scratches there. Hm.
Junpei will find that the door at the bottom of the room is super duper locked, though. There aren't any windows or any handy dandy labels to get an idea of what lies beyond it. Maybe they're not meant to go through it in this break-in, hm?]
Oh... So we'll likely be finding some deceased in here?
[like he's just going to go ahead and say it. he'll look over to where wwx seems to be having trouble with his door and then look back at his own. the rightmost door! is there a way to count how many doors there are in total? regardless higekiri will just be trying to knock on the rightmost door then.
and then he'll try to open it to see if he has the same problem! first a crack, and then the whole way if he can and he's not spontaneously attacked or nothing falls out.]
[She’s frowning at everything about this, especially Higekiri’s prediction. Regardless, when she notices that... She turns her attention towards the spot, lightly running a hand over where the scratches appear.]
What on Earth?
[Also, this scalpel is Hers now. She’s glancing over to see what other items there are amongst the tools other than the small blade she’s grabbed.]
Most likely, yeah. Or a zomb--you know what, no, never mind. I'm not saying it. [Door? Hewwo? He...kicks it, but that sure is locked so he'll head toward Beck.] What'd you find?
[And while she's checking the tools, he'll crouch and try to open the refrigerators under the counters as Higekiri and Wei Wuxian work on the bigger ones.]
[HE'S HOPING HE FINDS A ZOMBIE where are his zombies dammit he misses Wen Ning.
Anyway, with this fridge not working, he'll just scoot one over to the right. Any legible labels on this one? He repeats the same process of trying to open the door carefully so he can go sticking his nose around looking for some bodies.]
You've already practically said it, though!
[Bring on the z o m b i e s. He's also kind of keeping an eye and ear out toward where Beck is Just In Case. He has zero concern for himself but many concern for the people in here with him...]
[If Higekiri takes the time to individually count them, he will see there are 33 refrigerators on the left wall. Nice! Most of them have illegible, smudged writing... But there are some that are legible. Higekiri and WWX have found two of those now. The refrigerator Higekiri is trying is labeled as A████. It slides open easily enough, revealing a humanoid shape covered by a white plastic sheet. A clipboard is laying on top of the sheet, with some documents attached. The next one WWX tries is labeled N████, and WWX will find a similar scene inside: a humanoid shape under a plastic sheet, and a clipboard with some documents attached.
As Beck touches the scratches, they will notice that they are the right shape and size to match up with a human's hand. On the counter, she will find: Forceps, a cartilage knife, a dissecting hook, a blowpipe, an enterotome, a bone saw. a brain knife, a chisel, rib cutters, and scissors.
The first refrigerator Junpei open is stocked with jars filled with brightly colored, glowing liquid. Most of them are green and labeled, but... One of them glows blue. It lacks a label.]
Oh... There's 33 of these containers. [he means the fridges, and he's just going to announce that to the entire room! wonderful! that's not at all disconcerting!
as higekiri will just blink as the fridge slides open. he actually takes a moment to step back, bowing at the waist respectfully in greeting to the body inside.]
Excuse me. Please continue your rest.
[HE'S TRYING TO BE RESPECTFUL before he absoultely is going to go ahead and just try to retrieve the clipboard from inside to read it.]
Maybe nobody should say it. [To Junpei, though:] There are scratches on the autopsy table... It looks like a person made them.
[So, that’s horrifying, and that might be why she’s carefully putting the scalpel in her pocket and picking up the bone saw instead. She trusts nothing in this room!!
She’s heading Higekiri’s way as she hears the refrigerator sliding open, frowning once she sees the humanoid shape underneath. She doesn’t like doing this, but she takes a step closer and carefully lifts the sheet up to see the face underneath, unless Higekiri stops her.]
Thirty-three fridges, thirty-three people before us, and thirty-three of us. I'm starting to see a pattern...what do the papers say? This isn't the first time we've seen scratch marks around the ship either. [He'll address both of them because...bad...Beck walks away and Junpei's looking at these jars, eyebrows raising at the blue one.] ...think I found another item we need. Or, at least, this is something important.
[And so the blue jar gets tucked into his pocket safely, but the gun comes out to hold onto. He'll just pick up a few of these green jars to read the labels. What do we have here?]
[Body... He reaches for the clipboard to flip through the documents to check them over, too.]
Higexian, does yours say anything on it? Mine has an "N", but I can't read the rest.
[He'll also move to pull aside the plastic to check on the face of this body after he's done looking over the papers! There is like zero hesitation, god.]
Pardon the wake-up!
[He's not as gentlemanly as Higekiri, but he's relatively polite, at least...]
[Funny that you should mention seeing their faces.
Because neither of the corpses have one.
When Beck and WWX lift the sheets up, they will see that the bodies do not have a face. The corpse in the refrigerator Beck and Higekiri are checking out has shoulder-length brown hair. The corpse in the refrigerator WWX is checking has long black hair that continues under the plastic sheet. The clipboard Higekiri is reading contains the following information:]
A███████████████████████ F 28 NOTES: This is the body that was used as a catalyst to welcome the creatures into this realm... However, the subject does not present any abilities related to the concept of space and time. She is not a god, a time traveler, or a dimensional shifter. Perhaps she carries it in her blood as an untapped ability? It's a shame the subject is in no state to answer my questions.
[The documents WWX reads say:]
N███████████████████ F 18 NOTES: A shape-shifter... It's a shame her body collapsed when it did. She was pleasant company. I was disappointed that her immortality was conditional.
[The green jars all have the same thing on the label. It says:]
TO USE IN EMERGENCIES ONLY Detains the effects of accelerated apoptosis and necrosis.
It was "A".... I believe that this is this person's name.
[he doesn't seem that put off though? he peers over to see the corpse lacking a face, frowning, and then he's going to go ahead and just read off what's on his clipboard. no problem as far as he's concerned! everything here is creepy and he's not bothering to be surprised anymore!
once he's done reciting - ]
I wonder how she died.
[he'll assist with the sheet though, moving to see if there's anything else they can determine about the body. to A:]
[Beck, compared to Higekiri, looks a lot more disturbed - what’s more, it reminds her of something she’s seen before. That’s why she looks towards Junpei, beckoning him over as her grip on the bone saw tightens.]
Come take a look at this. It’s like... the first weekend.
[...HE DOESN'T WANT TO? HE REALLY. REALLY DOES NOT WANT TO COME CLOSER...but he does, keeping the blue jar safe in his pocket, the green jar in his hand and his gun in the other hand as he approaches.]
...you're right. Like what we saw on the camera, and what showed up on Prompto's camera, too. So what exactly does that mean? [...] April and Neena, if I had to guess. Two of the old hosts, but...that would mean that April was involved in something similar to what Polly pulled. Being used to summon whatever the fuck these things are. [He frowns lightly at the mention of abilities related to the concept of space and time.] Were...they looking for SHIFTers?
[He looks at the jar.] ..."to use in emergencies only. Detains the effects of accelerated apoptosis and necrosis." Detain means to keep under lockdown, and apoptosis and necrosis are types of cell decay. [...another look???] Wonder if those creatures really did infect the ship with a virus of some kind that took over and made the last group more susceptible to things.
You think so...? Maybe we should be covering our mouths, if that's the case. [He doesn't know shit about plagues but he knows about CORPSE POWDER POISONING.]
Ah-- This is what the one here says, too.
[He'll read out the contents of N's clipboard too, and tucks it back behind the faceless body. He also doesn't seem put off by any of this because of course, and starts to peer around at the front of the plastic sheet just to see if he can note anything particularly off about it from the outside before he goes doing anything wild like dragging a body out of the fridge.]
If two of the hosts are here, the other two probably are as well, hm?
[The bodies are naked, so. Nothing to loot. The flesh has turned ashen and cold from the amount of time spent inside the refrigerators. As Higekiri looks at the body, he won't see any sort of injury on A. WWX, however, won't be able to tell if anything is off without fully lifting the plastic, as the sheet is an opaque white.]
April wanted to do the fucking coitus with demons?
[he's just
comparing april to polly.
but higekiri just hums softly at that before turning to both beck and junpei once it seems like they aren't able to find anything.]
Should I check for anything else? She seems to lack obvious injury so perhaps she died from something else.
[he'll volunteer to be the one to handle the body since he a ) has gloves and b ) is less concerned about corpses and whatnot compared to the other two probably]
Or if the other two hosts are present, maybe we can locate their bodies as Wukiri suggested. There are thirty-three containers after all.
[Opens his mouth to correct "the fucking coitus" Closes his mouth and just. Hums.]
It's worth checking for the others, sure. [...] Nathan had immortality as one of his original skills didn't he? And Carlos is a SHIFTer, so that's...that's not coincidence, right? Or maybe it is but that's pretty weird. [He'll let Higekiri handle that body.] I'd say check her mouth for poisoning or something but...the whole "no face" thing makes that hard.
[...he's not exactly excited either, but sure, he'll go to try and open one of the other refrigerators.]
Well, if you can find the other two, we'll have a better idea of how closely they match up. Nathan had immortality, but I don't know that it's conditional and I don't think any of our hosts are shape-shifters, are they...?
[Off the sheet goes! Anything amiss over here...]
Ah— If anyone needs me to examine a body for them, let me know!
[Beck can try to open the refrigerator with illegible writing, but it just won't budge. Assuming Junpei tries one of the refrigerators by A's, it also won't open. That one, too, will have illegible writing.
Like A's corpse, N's appears to be devoid of any injuries. Her flesh has turned ashen and cold from the time spent in the refrigerator. Now that the sheet is off, though, WWX will see that her hair reaches past her waist.]
[higekiri will just tilt his head and try to peer over at the faceless head. it's just completely smooth? there's no features to be found there? but for the time being he will put the papers and clipboard for A off to the side and then just
cover up the corpse once more when he's done looking at it, and then try to put the body away and close the fridge again!!]
Thank you for your patience. Rest well.
[he'll try to check out the other fridges and see if he can find more legible writing once he's done there??]
[Since Higekiri is looking for more marked refrigerators, she's heading back towards the autopsy tables. If she opens one of the stainless steel cabinets that are in that area, what will she find?]
Couldn't Polly be considered a shape-shifter because she's a ghost? [But if Beck goes back to the tables, he'll just help Higekiri open the fridges, but starting more on the opposite end. This is still a weird room and he refuses to be ambushed, thanks.]
...so, and this is just a morbid idea, but what if the room's rigged to where we have to lay on the actual tables? We couldn't do anything in the arcade until we logged in our names to play the games.
