BOY OH BOY so Haymitch liked Beck from the start, not only because she seemed capable and competent, but because a lot of what he knew about her was familiar-- if not a personal level, at least an area one. He's familiar with friends and family overdosing; he's familiar with being the most experienced one in the room when it comes to murder and survival, but being outclassed when it comes to other things. But he really liked her, and really viewed her as one of the more innocent people in this game, which is why he's embittered she died so close to the end.

WHAT A MIX OF EMOTIONS HE FEELS FOR HER

Like, he despised her at first, full stop, but that's not that unusual for Haymitch. He at least respected her clear intelligence, but I don't think it came to a head til she tried to scapegoat Katy (and then save her but LOCAL MAN DIDN'T KNOW THAT). It was so-- to him-- out of nowhere that he was wildly taken aback, and it was only once Katy filled him in that he began to see her in a less huffy light.

Hoenstly, in some ways it reminds me of his relationship with Effie, lmfao, in that here's someone who is very clearly competent but because Haymitch has such a chip on his shoulder he got off on the wrong foot with her and THAT WAS THAT FOR A WHILE. That said: right now he's very much on her side, and if they're not friends, he at least seriously respects her as an ally.

he's also kind of into her! I'm ngl! It's hot to argue against a lady! Like not in a pining sense, he just finds her attractive as a sum whole.

WWX .... man I wish I hadn't gotten so overwhelmed with master's degree shit b/c this cr was really interesting? I think in a lot of ways the more Haymitch learned about him the more he was curious about how deep his happy-go-lucky persona went, or if it was genuine, or what. But he was always helpful and clever, and the fact he went to the bother of a funeral gesture meant a lot, even if Haymitch wouldn't say so.

Also: drinking buddies. That's always a mood.
